How to verify used-car service history

Service history is strongest when dates, kilometres, vehicle identifiers, workshop details and work performed are consistent across invoices or authorised records. Stamps or verbal claims alone may be incomplete.

Build a timeline

Arrange available records by date and compare kilometre readings, scheduled maintenance and major repairs.

  • VIN or registration consistency
  • Workshop and invoice details
  • Mileage progression without unexplained reversals
  • Oil, timing, transmission and other major service evidence

Separate complete from partial

Describe exactly which period the records cover. A partial history can still be useful, but it should not be labelled complete.

Evidence note

This guide does not claim a fictional inspection or customer case. Original showroom photographs and real case evidence will be added only after the business supplies and approves the source record.

Questions people ask

Does a service book prove every service?+

Not by itself. Compare entries with invoices or verifiable workshop records where possible.

What about missing years?+

Ask for an explanation and treat the uncovered period as unknown.
